Make The Change. And You’ll See One.
Getting yourself into the right mindset is the first thing you need to do to lose weight. But just thinking about all the things you have to do to lose weight is daunting, right?
Eat rabbit food. Say no to chocolate, wine, pizza, and anything and everything that actually tastes good. Stop overeating. Stop emotionally eating. Try to ignore the hunger pains – and the embarrassingly-loud stomach grumbles! Decline invitations to social events. Flake out at 3.00pm with zero energy. And just generally feel miserable – because after all, great-tasting food is one of life’s biggest pleasures!
Not only is the prospect of the diet daunting, but the thought of all the other stuff required to lose weight is just as daunting too. You know the drill…
Fight the urge to hit the snooze button at some ungodly hour, then drag your ass out of bed to exercise. Go completely gung-ho at the gym, then nearly collapse every time you lower yourself to sit the next day! Miss out on precious couch and Netflix time, because when you’re on a diet you feel you should be exercising every spare minute. Spend time washing your hair after each sweat session, or if you’re like me, rather, emptying half a can of dry shampoo into your crazy hair because you cant be bothered washing it… again.
The list is endless, and it sucks. There’s so much you have to give up and sacrifice to lose weight. I know how you feel – I’ve been there too. And I have no doubt I’ll continue to revisit these episodes throughout my life. After all, just because I’m a nutritionist and personal trainer, doesn’t mean I’m immune to weight gain.
But I do know it doesn’t have to be gruelling, and if you change your perspective from looking at the negatives of weight loss to looking at the positives, everything will change.
So how do you get in the right mindset to lose weight?
Weight loss is a mental challenge – not just a physical one. Surprising, right?! First, you need to take control of your mind by looking for the positive (not the negative). Next, you need to make the right choices – exercising instead of hitting snooze, saying ‘no’ to chocolate and eating a piece of fruit instead. Do this, and your body will naturally follow.
The key to maintainable weight loss isn’t just about calorie counting, or an exercise routine, or any kind of guilt-inducing deprivation. A large part of weight loss is changing your perspective on that list of sacrifices. So, first things first, let’s stop thinking about them as ‘sacrifices’ and instead see them as ‘steps towards your dreams.’
Try this new mindset…
Eating healthy is not about eating rabbit food. Your food doesn’t have to leave you hungry, taste bland, or restrict you from having an enjoyable lifestyle. In fact, quite the opposite. Eating healthy can taste amazing, and you’d be surprised at just how much food you can eat when you eat the right things – allowing you to feel full, but still lose weight. Rather than sacrificing your lifestyle, it will actually be enhanced by renewed energy and confidence to live life to the fullest.
By eating healthy foods, you give your body the energy it needs to bounce, nourishing you from the core so you can function optimally. You’ll jump out of bed, exude positive energy, glow from the inside-out, enjoy a crystal-clear mind, enable your body to reach its full potential, and finally understand what it means to feel ‘radiant’ and transform your life. After all, it’s not just your body that benefits – but also your relationships, your creativity, your career, your sense of abundance, and general ‘joie de vivre.’ Why? Because when you’re in a positive frame of mind, EVERYTHING just seems so much better. Even if you’re bored at work or dealing with some family drama, you’ll have the emotional strength to be resilient and see the bright side of life.
And what about those 5:30am wake ups? Again, let’s try a new perspective. What’s a few minutes of pain when your body is waking up, compared to a whole day’s worth of buzzing and increased endorphins from an early morning sweat? Nada! You’ll have a zest for life because you started your day off well, you’ll have more energy because you bounced out of bed, you’ll get shit done, and you’ll go about your life like an achiever. Your confidence will increase because your will to fight and succeed is stronger than the little voice in your head telling you to push the snooze button.
All of a sudden, you’ll be empowered because you know you can do it. You’ll be happy because you are doing it. And you’ll be guilt-free because you did it. Finally, you’ll be working towards your goals and achieving them. And it will feel so effing good, that you’ll do it again, tomorrow and the next day and the next.
So consider this:
We are limited not by our abilities, but by our mindset.
So, which mindset are you going to choose? Positive or negative? If you’re one of those people who always makes excuses and whines about their body but doesn’t do anything about it, stop wishing, stop whining, and just DO IT!
You have two simple choices:
- To change your life, make it a reality, and enjoy the benefits; or
- Remain the same.
So, which one are you going to choose?
You can’t make the same mistake twice. The second time you make it, it’s no longer a mistake, it’s a choice.
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
